Why mirror a bad image?

If customers and clients don’t particularly like your profession or industry then don’t mirror that negative image. Car salespeople and real estate salespeople are a good example. This week this comment made me think “They all drive around in their big BMW’s and wear flash suits” wow – that’s in a demographic which does look like that. And we’re trying to connect with people – while looking the opposite to them and their values. Think about it whilst remaining professional, think how your image and persona connects or disconnects you with your customers and clients.

Don’t be predictable. It’s amazingly disarming if you don’t do what your customers or clients expect – in a good way! If they complain and your service was hopeless, agree and tell them so. They know it so pretending otherwise is a waste of time. Doing this can instantly remove or break down barriers and make it easier to have an honest and trusted dialogue or interaction.

Trust is a must

How do you build trust – firstly do the things they understand well, they can judge you on that. In a service industry they can’t touch or feel your product but they can judge you if you turn up on time – trust – if you’re ready, prepared and exchange value for time at every meeting – Trust. And simply be honest – if something could have been better, agree with them – defending it might get a polite response but behind the scenes it won’t have built any trust. And if you’re technically right but morally wrong then you might “win” but you’ll lose trust. (I hope the “right” people at AMEX and CCF “get” this!!)

Before every appointment, meeting or interaction stop and check what your goal outcome is. Important meetings require more planning and goal focus. But even quick interactions must be beneficial – so pause even briefly to consider what outcome you want and how to structure your actions and dialogue to move you towards your goal.
